Zola Jesus - Conatus [4/5]

By martchelo on mercoledì, dicembre 28, 2011

Zola Jesus (Emile Zola + Jesus Christ, just to keep a low profile) loves to explore the dark corners of life and appreciates the beauty of dusk. The richness of her Wikipedia page gives an idea of the impact that Zola Jesus is having on contemporary music (between mainstream and experimental) despite having released her first album not long ago, The Spoils , in fact, has been released in 2009. Conatus is the third work of Zola Jesus and presents a somehow different Nika Roza Danilova from that of just 2 years ago. Like many artists starting extremism leaves room for a less rigorous and hardline approach. Nevertheless Zola Jesus never gives up with her signature style: electro-gothic atmospheres as always are full of references to the ever-present Siouxsie and the Banshees and Joy Division, but this time also give room to some pop (Lykke Li or Bat for Lashes to be clear) placing greater emphasis on the rhythmic component (as already happened in Stridulum II).
Sometimes Conatus is perhaps too pop (relatively, of course) but overall it has an admirable balance, the result of the consistent evolution of a talented artist.
I do not know if Conatus is the best work of Zola Jesus, it is certainly the most accessible, the production is rich and well-kept and I consider it an advantage because the lo-fi approach (used for The Spoils) is now a mannerist style exercise . In any case, it is one of the best records of the year: Vessel.
